We bought Dusty a new bed. We were hoping to encourage him to sleep in his "own" bed! He seemed to like it.... 
However, he just didn't realize his whole body was to go in the bed & that it wasn't just a pillow! ;op 
He was neutered on Wednesday. Since then, he has really taken a liking to his own bed & we can usually find him in it. It's nice even at night, that is where he has been sleeping. I guess, the neutering had multiple advantages!
UPDATE: Well.... I guess, I might have spoken too soon!
I am reading your post and feeling sad, your dog looks a lot like mine that went to the Bridge this last Monday, she had a large pillow that my son got for her to sleep on.
