Last week we went to the local state park for a field trip. We were taught about the different bats of Pennsylvania & what the advantages of bats are. There are 7 different kinds of bats that are native in PA. On different occasions there are 2 more kinds that will be found in the southern part of the state. I hadn't realized that some bats migrate & some hibernate here. It is important not to go into caves during the winter months. If the bats are disturbed too many times they use up a lot of their fat that is stored & therefore they can die. Bats are mammals. They are not blind as what most people believe. They also do not purposely swoop at peoples heads, but instead are trying to get the insects that are flying around people. We were given plans on how to build bat houses. My husband has been wanting to make bat houses for quite some time. We have found bats of several occasions hiding in our siding and porch decking. They are wonderful for keeping down the mosquito and insects. That's definitely a plus!
